Department of Business Analytics
Business analytics is the transformation of data into insights that help businesses make better decisions. Because it is multi-disciplinary, business analytics falls at the intersection of computer science, engineering, statistics, mathematics (particularly optimization), and business. The Department of Business Analytics in the Tippie College of Business has been at the forefront of research in business analytics for decades, and, as the recipient of the 2021 INFORMS UPS George D. Smith Prize, was recently honored as a top department in the world for preparing students for careers in analytics. The Department’s research strengths lie in predictive analysis for health care, social issues, social media, and text, and Department faculty have developed key methodologies in social network analysis, spatio-temporal data mining, and mathematical optimization. The Department is also known internationally for work in supply chain design and transportation, including humanitarian logistics, and last-mile delivery.
The Department of Business Analytics offers a BBA in Business Analytics and Information Systems, a part-time and full-time MS in Business Analytics, and a PhD program. Through its Tippie Analytics Cooperative, the Department is actively engaged with local, national, and Fortune 500 companies to continually enhance and improve student learning, and the Department hosts an annual Analytics Case Competition and Women in Analytics and Leadership Conference.
